Kako Ueda follows traditions. She wields an X-acto knife and sculpts with the most ordinary material – paper. For the past six years, she has been creating otherworldly visual maps of the ecosystem. The complexity of ecology is manifested by the precise cuts and intricate layering of organic elements such as plants, insects, animals and human forms. As deceiving as the images may be, these are in fact 3-dimensional wall pieces measuring up to 92″x55″.

Her latest work, a hybrid creature over 7′ high, is currently displayed in the “Slash: Paper Under the Knife” exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
