It’s literally a circus show.

Hope & Glory is a 2-month exhibition by Hong Kong-based artist, Simon Birch. Set in a massive 20,000 square foot space, Birch re-imagined the thriving circus industry from the 19th century in a notably different visual vocabulary to immerse the viewer into a metaphorical journey of a nation’s rise and fall, hopes and glories. From the hologram of haunting freak-show warriors to the glowing living room grid, each piece is designed to trigger the viewer’s curious mind to discover its symbolic values.

Watch the two-part guided tour by Birch himself, all told while wearing a top hat!

Exit Through the Gift Shop a.k.a. “The World’s first Street Art disaster movie”, is the first film attempted by highly anonymous graffiti artist, Banksy. It documents the story of Thierry Guetta, a French shop keeper turned documentary maker, who attempted to capture Banksy in an exclusive documentary, only to find that the tables (and camera) have turned and he became the subject of a failed film project.

The movie is foreign. It’s Swedish, so subtitles. Its disturbing, graphic violence and mature subject matter are not for the fainthearted. Now that everyone’s gone, the adaptation from global bestseller, the late Stieg Larsson, is a thrilling take on the murder-mystery genre, which captivates from first to final act. The cold, dry backdrop of Sweden’s countryside appropriately sets the tone for the dark case of Harriet Vanger’s mysterious disappearance 40 years ago. Convinced the killer was someone in his own powerful family; Harriet’s beloved uncle commissions the disgraced financial reporter, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and troubled computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to unravel the mystery. The acting from both leads is excellent, but the poise with which Rapace portrays her demanding role of bleak heroine is a delight for film aficionados grown tired of vacuous female heroes.

Out already in limited release across the US, Canadians have to wait for the end of May to catch this suspense-thriller. The good news is that the two other novels in the trilogy are also being adapted into film. Hopefully they’re released before Hollywood has a chance to botch this into another horrible English remake (See or don’t see 2009’s Brothers).

The Science Foursquare is social networking on the go. The location-based mobile app taps into your phone’s GPS and displays the whereabouts of friends on your network. You tell it where you are by “checking in”, Foursquare shares this with your friends, and rewards you with badges. By “checking in” it also suggests neighbouring locales along with any commentary your friends have given these places. That’s just the beginning. If you’re the most frequent visitor, you become the “Mayor” of that venue. Businesses have followed suit and are rewarding this loyalty with plenty of freebies.

The reason for its popularity is that it works on three fronts: social utility, sharing, and gaming-inspired rewards. People are already tweeting their whereabouts so it capitalizes on an existing behaviour. Next, it organizes what your friends thought about certain places in a timely manner – when you’re in the area. It borrows from gaming theory by rewarding you with points and unlockable badges as incentives to keep playing. These hip, addictive, social status badges (derived from the places you visit) range from “Gossip Girl to Douchebag”, and “Player Please!” to “Crunked”.

A recent execution involved restaurant review guide, Zagat, contributing professional content that enhanced the supporting suggestions users received when near a restaurant. Similarly, Warner Bros. worked collaboratively with Foursquare’s capabilities to promote its new film “Valentine’s Day”. Users were able to see branded tips on the most romantic places in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston.

Admittedly, still early in its inception, Foursquare is working with various brands to hammer out which metrics and platform features would be most effective to marketers. Nonetheless, the potential of its analytics data could provide marketers with an unprecedented look at exactly where consumers are and where they’re coming from before they come in contact with a brand. To further extend its reach, the platform should incorporate digital coupons and incentives that are accessible based on location (i.e. McDonald’s coupons when near a McDonalds). A further enhancement could incorporate in-store QR codes to make “checking-in” automatic. QR codes could even be extended directly onto products to make purchases more easily trackable. While Foursquare’s future is brimming with scary potential, presently it remains a budding platform that offers both utility and entertainment to social media consumers.
