Last Wednesday [Mar. 31], SPOKE’s office was left without power as a construction crane working on a nearby condo accidentally knocked down the power lines serving the whole block. But working in the heart of Toronto has its many perks. Food, entertainment, accommodations, you’re almost spoiled for choice, so we swiftly shipped off and set-up shop at the beautiful Pantages Hotel. Here, we were graciously welcomed and treated to an exquisite penne pasta. Oh, we got work done too.

The movie is foreign. It’s Swedish, so subtitles. Its disturbing, graphic violence and mature subject matter are not for the fainthearted. Now that everyone’s gone, the adaptation from global bestseller, the late Stieg Larsson, is a thrilling take on the murder-mystery genre, which captivates from first to final act. The cold, dry backdrop of Sweden’s countryside appropriately sets the tone for the dark case of Harriet Vanger’s mysterious disappearance 40 years ago. Convinced the killer was someone in his own powerful family; Harriet’s beloved uncle commissions the disgraced financial reporter, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and troubled computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to unravel the mystery. The acting from both leads is excellent, but the poise with which Rapace portrays her demanding role of bleak heroine is a delight for film aficionados grown tired of vacuous female heroes.

Out already in limited release across the US, Canadians have to wait for the end of May to catch this suspense-thriller. The good news is that the two other novels in the trilogy are also being adapted into film. Hopefully they’re released before Hollywood has a chance to botch this into another horrible English remake (See or don’t see 2009’s Brothers).

The Science Foursquare is social networking on the go. The location-based mobile app taps into your phone’s GPS and displays the whereabouts of friends on your network. You tell it where you are by “checking in”, Foursquare shares this with your friends, and rewards you with badges. By “checking in” it also suggests neighbouring locales along with any commentary your friends have given these places. That’s just the beginning. If you’re the most frequent visitor, you become the “Mayor” of that venue. Businesses have followed suit and are rewarding this loyalty with plenty of freebies.

The reason for its popularity is that it works on three fronts: social utility, sharing, and gaming-inspired rewards. People are already tweeting their whereabouts so it capitalizes on an existing behaviour. Next, it organizes what your friends thought about certain places in a timely manner – when you’re in the area. It borrows from gaming theory by rewarding you with points and unlockable badges as incentives to keep playing. These hip, addictive, social status badges (derived from the places you visit) range from “Gossip Girl to Douchebag”, and “Player Please!” to “Crunked”.

A recent execution involved restaurant review guide, Zagat, contributing professional content that enhanced the supporting suggestions users received when near a restaurant. Similarly, Warner Bros. worked collaboratively with Foursquare’s capabilities to promote its new film “Valentine’s Day”. Users were able to see branded tips on the most romantic places in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston.

Admittedly, still early in its inception, Foursquare is working with various brands to hammer out which metrics and platform features would be most effective to marketers. Nonetheless, the potential of its analytics data could provide marketers with an unprecedented look at exactly where consumers are and where they’re coming from before they come in contact with a brand. To further extend its reach, the platform should incorporate digital coupons and incentives that are accessible based on location (i.e. McDonald’s coupons when near a McDonalds). A further enhancement could incorporate in-store QR codes to make “checking-in” automatic. QR codes could even be extended directly onto products to make purchases more easily trackable. While Foursquare’s future is brimming with scary potential, presently it remains a budding platform that offers both utility and entertainment to social media consumers.

The Science Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that allows you to superimpose, through a camera, graphics and audio over a real-world setting in real-time. It augments what you’re actually seeing in front of you, like looking into a mirror and seeing something that’s not actually there. Recently, Wallpaper* Magazine included AR on their Cover. Functionally, all you have to do is turn on your webcam, go to their website’s AR section, flash the cover’s AR image code in front of your webcam, and witness your magazine come to life.

There is unlimited, untapped potential for this digital technology and it presents an unprecedented means for a brand to interact with its consumers. Because of AR’s requisite access to internet and a camera, smartphones have been at the forefront of capitalizing this technology. Imagine pointing your phone’s camera at anything in front of you and having 3-D graphics visually manipulate it instantly. The iButterfly application for iPhone combined with a GPS feature does just this and reinvents the way you collect coupons. Looking forward, it isn’t hard to imagine pointing your phone’s camera at any product with an AR image on it and having branded animation come to life right in front of you. Adidas has gone beyond this and created a whole AR world you can access with the AR image located on select shoes. Don’t have those shoes. No problem. Print out the image, smack it on your shoes, and you’re good to go.

The neighbourhood was once a deserted military barracks in the center of the city until the hippie-movement of the 70s called for change. In 1971, a journalist, Jacob Ludvigsen, and hundreds of squatters overtook the area to forge their peaceful anarchistic and libertarian existence with the following mission statement:

“The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible over the wellbeing of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted.”

Today, the self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood is home to artists, vagabonds, musicians, the impoverished, and is arguably one of the best places to showcase the progressive and liberated Danish lifestyle. However, its forged-sovereignty is far from being exempt of political controversy, which becomes further complicated by Christiania’s main cash crop− cannabis.

Along Pusherstreet amongst bakeries, falafel kiosks, beautiful street art, recycled urban architecture, and street vendors peddling Christiania souvenirs, are the infamous dealers. They are consensually obliged to adhere to, like every other resident under Christiana law, no selling of hard drugs, no stealing, no guns, and no bulletproof vests. Nonetheless, under Danish law there exists a smoking ban and police will randomly raid the area for vendors. This is accompanied by onlookers’ warning symphonies of “Ost, ost, ost” (the cheese are coming) to which follows the rapid scurrying of vendors into safer pastures.

Amidst this confusion and Christiania’s controversial existence is my memory of the place. Seen for its creative, loving, and friendly nature where one perfect Sunday at a blues café, they let my friend, Pat, get on stage with the band. For over an hour, he held his own with the rest of the band. The music was fantastic and at one point I swear that every instrument I could name was on stage, even the mighty cowbell. It’s this memory that I’ll remember and it’s just as so that it is a memory because there’s one last Christianian law− NO PICTURES!

The Science Structurally composed of millions of tiny microcapsule or cavities — an ink or oily substance fills them, and pigmented chips or balls with a negative charge float inside the microcapsule. You get a super-thin display where the E-ink technology creates something similar to an electric billboard (with 50 to 100 times less energy usage than LCD) that flashes on and off in different sequences, highlighting words and images. Check out the October 2008 edition of Esquire, the first magazine to execute this technology on its cover.

To visualize how E-Ink works, think of the million microcapsules as clear beach balls. These beach balls are filled with hundreds of tiny, white ping-pong balls. Instead of air, these beach balls are filled with a blue dye. Hence, if you looked at the top of the beach ball, you’d see the ping-pong balls floating in the liquid, making the beach ball appear white. The bottom of the ball, conversely, would appear blue. If you were to fill a football field full of these beach balls and make the ping-pong balls move between the top and bottom of the beach balls, you would make the field change colour. That’s how E-Ink works.

Flashing is good, it captures our attention. Think New Orleans and beads. Moreover, E-ink displays have distinct advantages over normal displays: low-power usage (is eco-friendly), flexibility (can be printed on any surface i.e. walls, billboards, product labels, T-Shirts), and readability (looks like printed text, so it doesn’t strain the eyes). This technology is used in e-readers (the Kindle, Sony Reader), mobile phones, portable drives and watches. In the near-future, expect to see periodicals that are electronically updated via the internet, therefore no wasted paper or newsprint (variety of e-readers are on the verge of mass-marketing this technology). Digital media applications include billboards, POP displays, electronic shelf labels and gaming possibilities (shatter-proof displays).
